Model Validation and 'Healing'

Bernhard Rupp

Bernhard Rupp, authored the seminal textbook "Biomolecular Crystallography: Principles, Practice and Applications to Structural Biology" and has a strong interdisciplinary background in crystallography ranging from materials science to protein drug target crystallography, instrumentation deveopment, structure model validation, and theory of knowledge . BR received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1984, followed by post-doctoral studies in Switzerland, Germany and Israel. BR is also an aviation professional and holds 5 Airline Transport Pilot ratings, incuding the B-737 jetliner and CE-500 business jet.

Bernhard presently splits his activities between California and Europe where he has been awarded a Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowship at the Innsbruck Medical University in Austria.

As the first speaker of the session, Bernhard set the stage for a discussion of model validation and healing by highlighting roots of bias in the practice of scientific inquiry and provided cautionary descriptions of structures with weak evidence supporting claims of ligand presence, identity of cofnromation. Acknowledgements

This venture would not be possible without generous funding from the ACA. We are grateful for the financial support. In addition, we would like to thank James Holton for continuing to provide logistical support. We are also indebted to our speakers for their time sharing experience and advice. Finally, thank you to Ms. Alyssa Crick for graphic design.
