Data Collection With The Pros

Overview

This website accompanies session 13.23, "Data Collection With The Pros" co-chaired by Edward Collins and Andrew Torelli at the 2012 ACA Meeting in Boston. In this session, three experts will discuss various best-practices and critical considerations that must be made to achieve a successful data collection from hard-earned crystals. Zbigniew Dauter is our keynote speaker and will demonstrate actual data collection on real protein crystls using remote access to SER-CAT beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source. James Holton will present on strategies and considerations related to maximizing signal over noise, and Kanagalaghatta (Raj) Rajashankar will discuss data collection with 6 million detectors (the new Pilatus 6M pixel-array detector).

Goal

The target audience is novice to advanced-intermediate X-ray crystallographers. The goal is to educate users not only in how to properly handle each "dataset scenario", but also empower users with the knowledge of how to properly use additional/alternative data processing software packages that they might not have used before.

Acknowledgements

This venture would not be possible without the considerable efforts of several people and generous funding from the ACA and our corporate sponsor HKL Research. We are grateful for their help. Specifically, we would like to thank Zbigniew Dauter for agreeing to give our keynote presentation, which involved considerable effort behind the scenes to arrange live remote data collection from crystals on the SER-CAT ID beamline. John Rose (University of Georgia) and John Chrzas (SER-CAT) were instrumental to this effort. We are also again indebted this year to James Holton for providing extensive logistical support, helpful discussions, and contributing his expertise for one of our talks. Thanks to our final speaker Raj Rajashankar for rounding out a very succesful session. Last, but not least, thanks to Ms. Alyssa Crick for her graphic design work.
