After downloading and installing NoMachine NX Client, start NX Client and create a new connection. (Select Default) Protocol: NX Click-> Continue (Enter the host name) Host: gateway.bl831.als.lbl.gov (Select Default) Port: 4000 Click-> Continue (Select Default Login method): PASSWORD Click-> Continue (Select Default Proxy): DON"T USE PROXY Click-> Continue (Accept the default Connection Name, or make one up) Click-> DONE SELECT-> the "Name" you just gave Click-> CONNECT Enter Username: Enter Password: Yea! You should now be NX'd into bl831.als.lbl.gov. There should be one or more "desktops" associated with your username, e.g. "mcfuser" Pick one which has no one connected, i.e. "0" connections, otherwise you will bump that user off when you connect. If you see a session named for your institution, choose that one, of course. ---- OR ----- You may choose to make a “New desktop” for yourself, but let that be a last resort. But if you do, choose “Create a New Gnome virtual desktop”. SELECT-> "[desktop name]" Click-> CONNECT Under the "OK" button, you might want set the 1:1 pixel option and select "full screen" OR "fit to screen", You can change this later. Click-> OK You should (after a moment or two or three) have computer desktop displayed on your monitor, perhaps a screensaver asking you for the password. If you don't see BLUICE, Open a terminal window, and type "go". It may take a few moments for BLUICE to start, be patient. See if you can select different "Tabs" in Bluice, open a terminal window, etc., but don't mess with beamline until it's your turn! To get back to the "Display" or "Connection" window, wiggle the mouse in the upper Righthand Corner, then click when the corner folds down. SELECT-> "Disconnect" to close your desktop. If given the option to "Terminate" Don't!
