************************************************************** WOW! AUTOMATIC Backup to a Firewire connected to BL831's PC (called "firewire") 1) Connected the firewire drive to the FIREWIRE computer with the cable labeled FIREWIRE, next to DVD writer. 2) The computer will automatically detect when you connect or disconnect a firewire drive. 3) The computer will automatically create a file called "ALS_831_mmddyy" on the firewire drive (and give it a share name "share") 4) rsh to server and is issue the following command to back up (dynamically!) directory /data/mcfuser/mydata. e.g.: backup_firewire.com //firewire /data/mcfuser/mydata 5) if you want to see what's in the firewire drive (without using the KVM switch) you can do so from graphics1 by "ls -lrt /firewire", e.g. Note, you can only do this from graphics1. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you want to give your firewire directory a different name: a) use KVM switch next to graphics1 and press the switch for FIREWIRE, b) kill the "autodetect.tcl" window c) erase the "ALS_831_mmddyy" if was created, d) create and/or share the directory you want your data copied to, e) share the directory and give it a share name, e.g. "myshare". f) from a linux machine, graphics1, e.g., rsh server and issue the following command: backup_firewire.com //firewire/myshare/ /data/mcfuser/mydata g) as above, your shared file on your firewire is visable from graphics1 as /firewire - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - All Done, and want to remove firewire Drive? Go ahead, OR -- you can use the KVM switch to get on computer named "FIREWIRE", -- and Turn OFF sharing on that drive, then click on the icon -- in the lower right "task bar" to "safely remove" the drive ************************************************************************ DHCP MS WINDOWS backup to firewire connected to User's PC 1) Connect Laptop to DHCP cable near Mac computer. 2) Turn on DHCP in "Network, local Area, Pproperties, TCP/IP, 3) Connect firewire drive and find firewire drive in "My Computer", e.g. 2) Turn on sharing at the appropriate directory level, 3) Give the directory a short "share name" name, e.g. "share". 4) ssh to the server 5) Run backup_firewire.com to see available arguments, Assuming your laptop has password:"mypass" and you want to backup /data/mcfuser/mydata, what you probably want to do is this: backup_firewire.com ///%mypass /data/mcfuser/mydata/ What this does is to go look for a DHCP host and try the password. When it finds a host it can connect to, it finds the available shared directory, then looks for the time_stamp in /data/mcfuser/mydata/, then starts sending all files created after that time. **************************************************** More info in DHCP ... an email from James: 1) the hub on 8.3.1 labelled "laptops DHCP" is for connecting laptops on the beamline's internal network. Laptops should be set to "Obtain IP address automatically" and to "obtain DNS automatically" 2) the data and home directories on 8.3.1 have the following Windows Pathnames: \\server\data \\server\home or \\192.168.1.1\data \\192.168.1.1\home (if they forget to do the "DNS automatically" thing) The username and password are the same as the ones they are using to collect data. Usually, this is mcfuser, but plexxikon has their own account and password.
